Organic products trade in the EU: import/export

If you are planning to import organic food into the European Union, you must make sure to comply with both, organic and general food and with the EU legislation. Every importer must register with a control body. Every consignment imported from countries that aren’t a member of the European Union (Switzerland and European Economic Area) must have a certificate of inspection, issued by:

• Control bodies or control authorities of a country recognized by the European Union
• A control body recognized by the European Union
• A control body or authority authorized by the Member State

This certificate of inspection must be present with the organic products that are imported, to the relevant authority of the Member State. In most cases it will be at the port of arrival by the local authority. Here, you can seek the release for the free circulation, in the all countries, members of the European Union.

In a case of export, you must comply with the regulations in the countries you are exporting. If you want to export products in the countries: Israel, Costa Rica, India, Canada, Japan, Argentina, Australia, United States of America, New Zealand, Switzerland, Tunisia and the European Economic Area (Iceland and Norway), you must check the competent authority requirements.

In both cases exporter/importer must obey many rules. Organic products have severe controls than conventional products. If you break some rule, a control body or the member state of the European Union, can punish you. All punishments are severe, so breaking even one rule, isn’t recommended!
