Organic products are those products that are manufactured without any use of growth enhancers, chemicals, insecticides, or pesticides. Artificial ingredients are added to products to extend the shelf-life so that they do not spoil. Generally the bulk stores have not been known to carry a lot of organic products because they buy the products in bulk and these products can’t be sold in a short period of time. However, you can find the following items in some stores and they will be labelled as organic: hemp seeds, quinoa, Turkish apricots, raisins, buckwheat, wheat kernels, pumpkin seeds, chopped dates, couscous, varieties of rice, Gogi berries, figs, almonds and Sucanat sugar, and others. They must carry the “ certified Organic” label to be considered organic.
Organic products are always available in the retail stores. They usually have a quick turnover so that the products can be sold within the expiry date mentioned by the manufacturer. If a bulk store does offer some organic products, it will surely mention the expiry date to ensure the products are not sold after that date and spoilage can be minimized.
Because of the increased demand for organic products, more bulk stores are beginning to offer them. Expect the price of these goods to be higher than non-organic foods because spoilage is higher and the store has to expect more loss. To compensate for this, the prices will be more and perhaps the choices will be less.
