Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is really common nowadays and most of the people don’t take it seriously and think of it as just a pain in their wrist and hand because of a cramp or something. However, this is a serious condition and can even limit the activities of our hands in the long run. Therefore it is important to have a complete understanding of this condition and know about its causes, symptoms and how we can treat it.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when our median nerve which controls the movement of our entire hand is corrupted and is unable to send the impulses to the muscles present inside our fingers and thumb. This can either happen due to an increase in the thickness of our tendons as a result of a swelling or the narrowing of the passage way that causes the medial nerve to be pressed or squished. As a result we may feel pain, weakness and numbness in our hand and wrist. If not treated properly then this feeling can escalate to the entire arm. The most common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are itchiness, numbness and burning of the fingers and palm. You may feel that your fingers are swollen when in fact they will appear to be perfectly normal.

A person suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome will have a difficulty in creating a fist and holding even the smallest of objects. It is important to consult a doctor right away if you feel any of the above symptoms. He may either recommend surgery or various non-surgical options depending upon your condition.
